EN: Mexico has a deep-rooted tradition of photography as a means of expression. The innovating impulse given in the second half of the 20th century by photographers such as Manuel and Lola Álvarez Bravo, Agustín Jiménez, Gabriel Figueroa, Nacho López, and Mariana Yampolsky put Mexican photography on the international map, where it is still very strongly present today.

The Mundos mexicanos: 25 Contemporary Photographers exhibition presents a number of the most significant works of recent decades. Roughly half of these belong to the collections of the Centro de la Imagen, which was established in 1994 withthe mission of acquiring photographs and promoting photography in Mexico.

Durant la seconde moitié du XXe siècle, l'impulsion renouvelée de photographes comme Manuel et Lola Álvarez Bravo, Agustín Jiménez, Gabriel Figueroa, Nacho López et Mariana Yampolsky, entre autres, a hissé la photographie mexicaine à un niveau international, où elle reste largement présente aujourd'hui encore.L'exposition Mundos mexicanos. 25 photographes contemporains dévoile quelques-unes des œuvres les plus importantes des dernières décennies. Environ la moitié d'entre elles proviennent des collections du Centro de la Imagen, fondé en 1994, qui a pour objectif d'acquérir des photographies et de les diffuser au Mexique.

NL: 'Lijn 3' bekijkt de grootstedelijke problematiek vanuit het perspectief van een Gentse arbeiderswijk anno 2009. 

Door middel van een imaginaire busrit wordt op een diepgravende en genuanceerde manier het sociologisch weefsel van de grootstedelijke samenleving blootgelegd. Deze keer echter geen clichéverhaal over hangjongeren of Oost-Europese dealers, maar een ontmoeting met mensen van diverse pluimage. Neem de tijd om te ontdekken hoe het is om te overleven in de marge van de welvaartsstaat. Leer mensen kennen die u anders nooit zou ontmoeten. Uw buren.

De fotografen die deze rit in beeld hebben gebracht zijn niet de minsten. Filip Claus, Tim Dirven, Jonas Lampens, Jimmy Kets, Bob Van Mol en Yann Bertrand behoren tot de top van de Belgische fotografie. Een jaar lang volgden zij de handel en wandel van mensen uit de wijk, in het kielzog van Jan Beke, toen straathoekwerker van de buurt.

Het fotoboek Lijn 3 schetst een intiem portret van een volkswijk waar mensen steeds verder geïsoleerd raken. Het resultaat is een ontnuchterend verslag van een samenleving onder druk, zonder vooroordelen, maar ook zonder verbloeming.

EN: In her still and subdued works, Rinko Kawauchi (1972), one of the most celebrated Japanese photographers of her generation – tries to capture the brief and transient beauty of the everyday things we often overlook. Playing on such themes as the family and our interaction with the cycle of nature and life, this artist looks for wonder in details. It is astonishing that her sensitive yet forceful way of observing the world around her and of catching fleeting moments in a photo actually results in an exquisite fragility – which is also evident in her meticulously constructed compositions.

Michèle Matyn | A trip in the eye of Guy Maddin

NL: Op vraag van de beursschouwburg trok fotografe en beeldend kunstenaar Michèle Matyn naar het Canadese Winnipeg, pal in het hart van het Nood-Amerikaanse continent. In het kielzog van de bizons, kariboes en ijsberen ging ze op zoek naar de ziel en de geschiedenis van dit gebied.

FR: Sur invitation du Beursschouwburg, la photographe et artiste visuelle Michèle Matyn s'est rendue à Winnipeg, petite grande ville canadienne au coeur du continent nord-américain. Dans le sillage des bisons, caribous et ours polaires, elle part à la recherche de l'âme et l'histoire de la région.
